يستعرض هذا الكتاب مذكرات "سعد بن أحمد الربيعة" في رحلته للحج سنة 1345هـ من بلدة الزبير لحج بيت الله الحرام وزيارة المدينة المنورة، واستغرق ذلك وقتاً طويلاً، وقد حرص ابنه "عبد العزيز بن سعد بن الربيعة" وحفيده "سعود بن عبد العزيز بن الربيعة" على نشر هذه المذكرات في حياته.
وكتب "سعد بن أحمد الربيعة" مذكراته عن هذه الرحلة وهو يعبر الصحراء على ناقته بقلم رصاص في دفتر صغير لم يستطع "سعود بن الربيعة" نقل جميع ما كتبه من وصف دقيق وتعبير جميل خلال هذه الرحلة.
بدأت القافلة مسيرها من بلدة الزبير آخذة طريق وادي الباطن حتى مدينة بريدة مُيمَّمة وجهها إلى مكة المكرمة حيث حطت رحالها لأداء فريضة الحج، ومن ثم اتجهت شمالاً مارة بمدينة رابغ حتى وصلت إلى المدينة المنورة، وبعدها ارتحلت بإتجاه مدينة حائل وعبر نفوذ الدهناء مواصلة إلى بلدة الزبير رحلة تجاوزت ثلاثة أشهر من 23 شوال عام 1345هـ حتى 4 صفر 1346هـ.
لقد تميزت هذه المذكرات بالوصف الدقيق، فقد حرص المؤلف على تصوير كل ما رآه في هذه المذكرات التي تصنف تحت ما يسمى بأدب الرحلات، والملحوظ أن المؤلف اتبع طريقة المذكرات اليومية بأسلوبه الأدبي الممتع ولغته السهلة.
وكان المؤلف معجباً بشخصية الملك "عبد العزيز" وقد أورد جزءاً من هذا الإعجاب في هذه المذكرات، ونظراً لإستخدام المؤلف بعض الكلمات الشائعة ولوجود بعض الأخطاء الإملائية واللغوية، فقد تم إستدراكها في النص المطبوع دون الإشارة إلى ذلك في الهوامش حتى لا يمل القارئ، ولأنها لا تمس أصل كلام المؤلف وأساسه.
