كاتب الوحى، وأمين سر رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، ذلك هو أبى بن كعب بن قيس، من أهل المدينة، ينتمى إلى بنى النجار أخوال عبد المطلب بن هاشم. كان أبى بن كعب موضع ثقة الناس، وكاتم أسرارهم قبل الإسلام، فلما ذاق حلاوة الإيمان، وحب رسول الله والمسلمين، تأهل لحمل أمانة كبرى، فاتخذه الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) كاتباً للوحى، وأميناً على أسراره، فكان أول من كتب له بالمدينة المنورة. ورغم أن كثيراً من الصحابة قد كتبوا لرسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) ، إلا أن أبى بن كعب كان الكاتب الأول، حتى نهض معه فى ذلك، زيد بن ثابت الأنصارى، لكن ظل أبى بن كعب قمة ثابتة فى القراءة وحسن الأداء وإحكام التلاوة، حتى شهد له بذلك رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) حين قال يصف أصحابه: أرحم أمتى أبو بكر و... وأقرؤهم أبى بن كعب، ولذلك كان يعهد إليه بالوفود، يعلمهم القرآن ويبصرهم بالشريعة والدين. تتلمذ عليه كثير من الصحابة كابن عباس وأبى هريرة وأبى موسى وغيرهم وروى عنه عمر بن الخطاب وأبو أيوب الأنصارى وعبادة بن الصامت وغيرهم، وعندما توفى الرسول كان أبى قد جمع القرآن الكريم فى مصحف، عرف بمصحف أبى، ثم اشترك فى جمع القرآن على عهد أبى بكر الصديق، ثم كان عضواً فى اللجنة التى كونها عثمان بن عفان، من كتاب الوحى، فأنجزوا جميعاً ما عرف بالمصحف الإمام، ومن ثم ارتضاه جميع المسلمين، والتزموا به. كان نحيفاً إلى القصر أقرب، أبيض الوجه والرأس واللحية والثياب، نظيفاً مرهف الحس، معنياً بكتاب الله، وأحوال المسلمين، لقبه الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) بسيد الأنصار، ولقبه عمر بن الخطاب بسيد المسلمين، (رضى الله عنه وأرضاه)
