تحفل كتب الأدب والأخبار ودواوين الشعر بالوصايا، وصايا الآباء والأمهات من البدو والحضر ووصايا المصلحين والهداة، ووصايا الحكماء والعلماء ووصايا الملوك والخلفاء والأمراء. والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو عبارة عن مصورة لمخطوطة في أدب الوصايا بعنوان "وصايا الملوك وأبناء الملوك من ولد قحطان بن هود" منسوبة إلى "دعبل بن علي الخزاعي" (148-246هـ) برواية "علي بن محمد بن دعبل الخزاعي" وجدها الدكتور "نزار أباظة" في خزانة مخطوطات مجمع اللغة العربية بدمشق محفوظة برقم (281) والكتاب كما يروي لنا الدكتور أباظة وهو الموسوم بـ "وصايا الملوك وأبناء الملوك من ولد قحطان" إسمه يدل عليه، جمع فيه ما نقل عن هؤلاء من وصاياهم لبنيهم في شؤون الملك والحفاظ عليه، بادئاً بموعظة هود عليه السلام لقومه ووصيته لهم منتهياً وصايا أواخر ملوكهم من الفساسنة في بلاد الشام. ولم تقتصر الوصايا على النثر، بل إستفاض الشعر في الكتاب حتى كاد يكون ديواناً في الوصايا. وقد إشتمل هذا الشعر على غريب كثير شأن الشعر الجاهلي، كما إشتمل الكتاب أيضاً على بعض قصص وحوادث، نسبها إلى ملوك اليمن، جاءت في ثنايا الكتاب... وترد في الكتاب قصائد في الفخر على لسان هؤلاء الملوك وأبنائهم وشعرائهم.
ولأهمية هذه المخطوطة عمد الدكتور نزار أباظة إلى تحقيقها متغلباً على كثير من الصعوبات بتوثيق نصوص الأخبار، من بعض الكتب التي تعتبر مصادر ترجمة دعبل مثل ابن المعتز في طبقات الشعراء، والذهبي في ميزان الإعتدال وسير أعلام النبلاء وغيرها كثير، وكذلك من دواوين الشعراء المعروفين الذين ذكرهم المؤلف بأسمائهم، ومن كتب الأخبار والتاريخ والمعاجم، مع شرح الألفاظ الغربية، والإشارة إلى الإختلاف في الروايات والمقارنة بينها وبين مواضع الأمكنة التي جاءت في النص ووثقها، وترجم للأعلام الوارد ذكرهم في المتن، ومن أجل إخراج النص على نحو سليم ضبط الأشعار وعيَن بحورها.
