يتناول الكتاب فكر الجماعات الإسلامية من خلال حوار صحفي أجراه الصحفي مكرم محمد أحمد مع قادة الجماعات الإسلامية داخل سجن العقرب ويحلل الأخطاء الدينية التي وقعوا فيها ومراجعة أفكارهم القديمة والخطأ فيها.
بعد مبادرة وقف العنف التي أعلنها من جانب واحد قادة الجماعة الإسلامية في مارس 1997، لم أصدق بالفعل أن المبادرة جاءت وليدة عملية مراجعة شاملة لفكر الجماعة قامت بها هذه القيادات وهي داخل السجون، أثمرت فكراً جديداً يستند إلى رؤية شرعية صحيحة وفهم جديد لمعنى الجهاد أكثر قرباً من ينابيع الإسلام الصحيحة، ولم أصدق أنها نجحت في إقناع معظم قواعد الداخل، كما نجحت في إقناع العدد الأغلب من قيادات الخارج، وكان هاجسى الدائم ان في الأمر صفقة!.
لكن الظروف أوقعت في يدى الكتب الأربعة التي كتبها قادة الجماعة بعد مراجعة فكرهم القديم، والتي تتحدث عن حرمة الغلو في الدين، وحرمة تكفير المسلمين، وتسلط الأضواء على ما وقع في الجهاد من أخطاء جسيمة، وتعيد النظر في المفاهيم الخاطئة التي شوهت دعوى "الحسبة".. وكانت قراءة الكتب الأربعة هى الحافز الذي دفعني إلى لقاء قيادات الجماعة في سجنهم، وجمع تلك الحوارات في هذا الكتاب الذي يبحث فيما وراء ذلك عن الدروس والعظات المستفادة.
