لم يكد يتم دفن هارون الرشيد -الذى مات فى ولاية فارس- حتى نشب النزاع بين أبنائه وورثته. ومرة ثانية يحس بالصراع بين السلطة بين العرب والفرس. فكان ابنه الأمين من أم عربية، أما المأمون فكان من أم فارسية من حريم هارون الرشيد. وكان أن ظهر الولاء للأم: فالأمين كان يفضل العرب بينما المأمون الفرس.
وعندما فقد العرب نفوذهم كانت شيعة على -التى كان مركز مذهبها فى الشرق دائماً- قد دفعت إلى الأمام دفعة قوية. لدرجة أن المأمون -الذى صار خليفة- فكر فى أن يفرض مذهب الشيعة على كل المسلمين. إلا أن هذه الفكرة كانت ثورية بالنسبة لخليفة من البيت العباسى، فآل عم النبى (صلى الله عليه وسلم) كانوا حتى هذه اللحظة يبذلون جهداً هاماً فى محاربة زعماء الشيعة الشرعيين وقتلهم، والآن يريدون أن يكونوا هم أنفسهم الزعماء. وكانت النتيجة هى حتمية الصلح مع الأئمة، السلالة المباشرة للنبى وصهره على. وكان الصلح بين الخليفة -أى القيادة السياسية، وبين الإمام -أى القيادة الدينية، يمثل مظاهر لإعادة الوحدة بين الدين والسياسة، ثم بدأت فكرة الخليفة الثورية فى التحقق، فقام الخليفة عظيم بيت آل عباس، بدعوة الإمام الثامن على الرضا، كرجل حر، بل كضيف فى بغداد ليشارك فى تحمل المسؤولية.
