يتمثل أحد الأهداف الأساسية لهذا الكتاب في تقديم عون موجه للقراء المهتمين بالدرس اللغوي في مجال علمي، يتطور تطورًا شديدًا، ما يزال من الصعوبة بمكان أن يحيط به الأفراد في الوقت الحاضر إحاطة تامة، ويرجع ذلك إلى التنوع المربك لطرائق الوصف المتباينة على وجه الخصوص، التي تستخدم عنوان "علم لغة النص"، دون أن تكون لها- إلا في القليل علاقة تذكر بوصف كليات النص.
ومن أجل هذا قدمنا من خلال هذه الإيضاحات عرضًا شاملًا لطرائق الوصف اللغوية النصية والوثيقة الصلة من وجهة نظرنا (وليس عروضًا جزئية!). وهكذا فهي كل تلك الطرائق التي أسهمت في إنشاء "علم النص"، والتي يبدو أن لها دورًا مهمًا في استمرار تطوره (الفصل الأول)، وفي الفصل الثاني قدم مؤلفا هذا الكتاب النهج الإطاري اللغوي النصي في صورة "موجز مجمل" لذلك التطور التاريخي لعلم النص، وكذلك التطور اللاحق لنماذج وصف النص الحالية، ولقد ركز (الفصل الثالث) من هذا الكتاب بصفة خاصة على مشكلات تصنيف النص: فلم تعد تظهر مجرد ذيل للتناول اللغوى النصي الكلي، بل عولجت مباشرة وفقًا لتحديد نهج الوصف.
ويشكل كل من النموذج الإطاري والتصنيف متعدد المستويات الأساس لوصف المشكلات الجزئية في علم لغة النص من خلال تحليل الحديث (الفصل الرابع) والاتصال الكتابي (الفصل الخامس). وسوف نعرض هنا أيضاً بالأمثلة لطريقة عمل النصوص في الاتصال (وبخاصة مسألة تنشيط النموذج). وينبغي أن يشار من خلال ذلك إلى الاستعمال المتباين للغة في التعامل الاجتماعي. ولا تلعب عملية صياغة النص في هذا الإطار إلا دورًا هامشيًا. أما المناقشة المفصلة فينبغي أن تظل وجهة أعمال أسلوبية متخصصة، وأخيرًا نقدم في الفصل السادس بعض المجالات التطبيقية في علم لغة النص، ويصير النفع المباشر من البحث اللغوي النصي بهذه الخلفية جليًا، كما أن فهرس المصطلحات في نهاية الكتاب يعين القارئ على سرعة إدراك ثوابت مفهومية وتصورية في النماذج المختلفة لوصف النص.
