إن قراءة فصول هذا الكتاب حول اقتصاد الريف تعطي انطباعاً بأن علم الاقتصاد الاشتراكي ينكشف هنا في سياق إيقاعات الحياة الريفية التي تبرز في ثنايا النص، وكأنه حجاباً يتمزق. إنه الكتاب الذي يفسر نشوء وانهيار آخر الامبراطوريات في القرن العشرين بحيث يظهر فيه غورباتشيوف لا كصاحب خط جديد، بل كمحاول لإلباس زي جديد لأيديولوجيا ظهرت أوائل هذا القرن، وكأنها لم تزل صالحة لأواخر هذا القرن... إن هذا الكتاب يشرح كيف أطلق غورباتشيوف "عجلة" البريسترويكا والفلاسنوست لتحديث الحزب/الجهاز، وكيف خرجت هذه العجلة عن السكة.. فكان السقوط العظيم للفكرة/الايديولوجيا... وللرجل.
