عند العودة إلى التاريخ العربي والإسلامي ومنه تاريخ منطقة بر الشام، التي يشكل الجبل العاملي أحد أخطر وأهم ثغورها حتى الآن، نجد أن هذه المنطقة من بر الشام تختلف عن غيرها من بقية المناطق في كل الأمور: في التاريخ، في الحروب، في الخلفية الفكرية والحضارية وفي القداسة. فتاريخ هذه المنطقة باستثناء جبل عامل، هو تاريخ الحكام الظالمين، وتاريخ القمع والقتل والنهب والتشريد.
أما إذا رجعنا إلى كتب التاريخ التي أرخت للجبل العاملي نجد أن أمراء هذا الجبل من آل الأسعد، صنعوا له ولشعبه تاريخاً مختلفاً، صنعوا له تاريخ الحرية والعدالة والكرم المنقطع النظير وتاريخ الثورة على الظلم، وجعلوا منه واحة أدب وشعر لتعلقهم بفكر الحسين وأبناء الحسين عليه السلام. مما جعل هذه الحقبة من تاريخ لبنان وبر الشام أشبه بالطائر الذي غرّد خارج سربه، فاستحق صنّاعه من آل السعد، لأن يذكرهم التاريخ، ولأن يمدحهم الشعراء والأدباء.
ولم يعرف التاريخ العربي والإسلامي كله حالة تكوكب فيها أكثر من ثلاثين شاعراً حول زعيم او أمير أو ملك أو خليفة كما اجتمع حولهم، يمحونهم لا طمعاً بالعطاء، بل إيماناً بقيادتهم وإمارتهم. وسوف نستعرض كل القصائد التي قيلت في مدح أو معاتبة أو رثاء الأمراء من آل الأسعد. حفظاً لهذه الحقبة المضيئة من تاريخ لبنان.
