تمثل اليوم مواقف الحركات والأحزاب في البلاد العربية ومخاوفها من الممارسة الديمقراطية إحدى العقبات أمام عملية التحول الديمقراطي. ومن هنا يتوقف على مقاربة مواقف هذه الحركات والأحزاب-سواء كانت في المعارضة أو في الحكم-مستقبل التحول الديمقراطي. من هذا الفهم والتقدير لأهمية تنمية ممارسة الحركات والأحزاب للديمقراطية، ومن أجل السعي إلى زيادة إمكانيات تبني الديمقراطية من قبل الحركات والأحزاب... رأى مشروع دراسات الديمقراطية في البلدان العربية، أن يطرح للحوار في لقائه السنوي السادس عام 1996 ولقائه السنوي السابع عام 1997، إشكاليات الحركات والأحزاب في البلاد العربية مع الديمقراطية، وإشكالية الديمقراطية مع بعض متطلبات ممارستها من قبل تلك الأحزاب والحركات.
وقد تم طرح هذه الإشكالية للحوار بين الباحثين والمفكرين والممارسين من مختلف التيارات الفكرية، ويأتي كتاب "الحركات الإسلامية والديمقراطية: المواقف والمخاوف المتبادلة" الذي نقلب صفحاته، يأتي متضمناً أوراق المشاركين وتعقيباتهم ومداخلاتهم في اللقاء السابع.
