يعتبر الكتاب من أحسن ما ألف في علم الإنسان حيث جمع كثيراً من القبائل والشعوب فْأوصل آخر القبائل بأوائلها بخطوط تمتد من الآباء إلى أبنائها ووضع كل اسم في ضمن دائرة تحيط به وما ذكر على القبائل من التفصيل والبيان يذكره بين الخطوط بوضوح. وقد ألحق به أنساب بعض الملوك وغيرهم فابتدأ الأنساب من آدم عليه السلام أبو البشر. وقد ربت المؤلف كتابه على ثلاثة عشر باباً: فضل علم الإنسان وفائدته ومسيس الحاجة إليه، باب من من يقع عليه اسم العرب وذكر أنواعهم وما ينخرط في مسلك ذلك بأن في معرفة طبقات الإنسان وما يلحق بذلك باب في فكر مساكن العرب القديمة التي درجوا منها إلى سائر الأقطار، باب في بيان أمور يحتاج الناظر في علم الإنسان إليها وباب في معرفة بعض أنساب العرب وبعض الترك والروم والسودان باب في ذكر القبائل التي ذكرها النسابون ولم يلحقوها بقبيلة، باب في ذكر القبائل التي اختلف فيها هل هي من العرب أو من غيرهم، باب في معرفة ديانات العرب قبل الإسلام أو علومهم، باب في ذكر بعض مفاخرات العرب، باب في ذكر أيام الحروب في الجاهلية ومبادئ الإسلام، باب في ذكر نيران العرب في الجاهلية، باب في ذكر أسواق العرب فيما قبل الإسلام.
