يبحث هذا الكتاب في البدايات: بداية ظهور المرأة في مجال النقد الأدبي عند العرب ما بين أواخر القرن الأول وأوائل القرن الثاني الهجري (=735م). ليصل بينه وبين بدايات النقد الأدبي عند العرب (قبيل 600م – 750م). من جابن آخر يربط بين نقد النساء في هذه الحقبة المبكرة من التاريخ وبين مقولات "النقد الأدبي النسوي" في عصرنا الراهن، سواء أجاءت هذه المقولات في مصادر النقد الأدبي النسوي الأساسية في الغرب. أو جاءت في كتب عربية تبنت هذه المقولات. ليتبين من البحث أن صلة المرأة بالنقد الأدبي كانت وثيقة في أوائل تاريخنا العربي الإسلامي.
يناقش الكتاب عدداً من النصوص التي تضمنتها كتب التراث تحمل مرويات تتصل بنقد الشعر، يرد معظمها منسوباً إلى سكينة بنت الحسين.
ويرد القليل منها منسوباً إلى نساء أخريات. ويضم الكتاب هذه النصوص في الملحق في نهايته كما وردت في الكتب التي أوردتها.
ينتهي الكتاب إلى أن صوت المرأة العربية في بدايات التاريخ العربي الإسلامي كان مسموعاً وكان يسجله الرواة. وأنها لم تخلد إلى الصمت إلا في قرون تالية.
