ومن الدراسات والأبحاث التي تجرى لاختيار البرامج لأنجح في مقاومة الآفات دراسات بيئية وحياتية. ومن الجوانب المهمة في الدراسات البيئية معرفة الكثافة العديدية للآفة ووقت ظهورها واختفائها في الحقل وطورها الضار ومظهر الإصابة بها وتأثير درجات الحرارة والرطوبة والرياح عليها، وتأثير الأعداء الحيوية من المفترسات والطفيليات على أعدادها. وأهم ما تتضمنه الدراسات الحياتية معرفة عدد الأجيال وفترة كل جيل ومعدل عدد البيض للأنثى الواحدة ودرجة نجاح الأفراد للوصول إلى طور الحشرة الكاملة، ومقدار ما تسببه من ضرر اقتصادي.
في هذا الإطار يأتي هذا الكتاب والذي تشتمل مفرداته على الجوانب العلمية التطبيقية للنظريات الأساسية لعلم بيئة الحشرات والتطبيقات العملية عن كيفية أخذ العينات من النباتات الصغيرة، أو الشجيرات أو الأشجار، وصف دقيق لبعض الأجهزة البسيطة والمتطورة المستخدمة في معرفة الكثافة العددية للحشرات منها مصائد الحشرات المختلفة وأدوات جمع الحشرات التي تناسب أنواعها وعوائلها النباتية.
