تعد مرحلة الجمهورية (1649-1658) من المراحل المهمة في تاريخ إنجلترا الحديث, وأحد أبرز أحداث القارة الأوروبية في القرن السابع عشر, إذ أذهلت العديد من الأنظمة الملكية الأوروبية, مما حدا بهذه الأنظمة إلي إسباغ العدائية علي جل مواقفها تجاه الجمهورية الفتية التي راحت بدورها تبلور سياستها صوب المعاملة بالمثل, مما أمكنها من أستعادة مركزها العالمي الذي تبؤاته زمن ملوك آل تيودور, بوصفها قوة عظمي يحسب لها ألف حساب, الذي بدا تراجعه واضحاً للعيان زمن ملوك آل ستيورات.
فكانت الجمهورية بزعامة الحامي أوليفر كرومويل oliver cromwell (1658-1599), نقطة تحول أساسية في تطور النظم السياسية والدينية والإجتماعية في إنجلترا وأوروبا علي وجه العموم, فقد وضعت حداً للنظام الملكي القديم القائم علي السلطان المطلق المستند إلي نظرية الحق الإلهي في إدارة حكم البلاد, بعد أن خاضت إنجلترا حرباً أهلية كبري أنقسمت فيها إلي معسكرين, المعسكرالأول: مثل حزب الملك, والمعسكر الآخر: مثل حزب البرلمان, فكانت الغلبة لصالح البرلمان بزعامة كرومويل, الذي قاد إنجلترا وأدار سياساتها الداخلية والخارجية علي حد سواء بكل ما يملكه من ثقة وحصافة.
تتألف الدراسة من مقدمة وأربعة فصول وخاتمة: تناول الفصل الأول مدخلاً وتمهيداً لموضوع دراستنا بعنوان إنجلترا في عهد آل ستيورات 1603 وحتي 1648 والذي شمل ثلاث مباحث: أولهما: تناول نظرة عامة في تاريخ إنجلترا, وثانيهما: خصص للحرب الأهلية الدامية التي دارت رحاها في إنجلترا حتي نهايتها عام 1649.
تطرق الفصل الثاني إلي موضوع إعدام الملك شارل الأول وردود فعل المعارضة, وتضمن خمسة مباحث.
في حين تضمن الفصل الثالث تاريخ إنجلترا منذ حل البرلمان الطويل عام 1653 وحتي وفاة كرومويل عام 1658, وقد قسم الفصل إلي أربعة مباحث.
أما الفصل الرابع فقد أفرد لسياسة إنجلترا الخارجية في عهد الجمهورية, إذ قسم إلي ثلاثة مباحث.
هذا وقد أعتمد المؤلف في دراسته هذه علي مجموعة في الوثائق الدستورية, وبعض الكتب العربية والمعربة, وكتب المذكرات, والبحوث والموسوعات إضافة إلي أعتماد المؤلف علي العديد في المصادر المهمة المتوافرة علي الشبكة الدولة للمعلومات علي موقع غوغل.
