يشغل الجيش الإسرائيلي موقعاً مهماً ومميزاً في النظام السياسي الإسرائيلي، ويعد من أهم عناصر بناء الدولة العبرية التي هي أقرب ما تكون إلى ثكنة عسكرية، حيث إن نحو 20% من سكانها من مختلف الطبقات والشرائح هم من جنود أو ممن يمكن وضعهم تحت السلاح، وهناك أعداد أخرى يمكن أن تتحول إلى عسكريين عند الحاجة وبذلك يصبح العدد المتبقي من سكان الدولة العبرية هم الأطفال وكبار السن، والذين لا تنطبق عليهم شروط التجنيد الألزامي، ولا الاحتياطي.
ولا تقتصر أهمية الجيش الإسرائيلي على المهام الأمنية والدفاعية فحسب، بل إن له دور سياسيا بارزا داخل النظام السياسي للدولة العبرية، فقد تولى العديد من جنرالات الجيش أدواراً سياسية في المؤسسات التنفيذية والتمثيلية والحزبية الإسرائيلية وفي مختلف مراتبها حيث تولدت قيادات سياسية من أصول عسكرية يبلغ عددها مئات الأشخاص وهي نخبة متجددة وشابة حيث تؤكد العديد من الدراسات أن ما يزيد على 10% من كبار الضباط أو المتقاعدين (من رتبة عقيد فيما أعلى في إسرائيل يتجهون إلى العمل في المجال السياسي)، كما أفرز الجيش الإسرائيلي خلال العقود الماضية عدداً من كبار المسئولين.
