تدور أحداث الرواية حول شخصية "خالد"، موظف هش الشخصية يعاني من مشاكل في إثبات ذاته وتحقيق طموحه وتردده حول طبيعة أمنياته، يعمل في بيئة تتميز بتبدلات وتغيرات بعضها إيجابي، وبعضها الآخر سلبي ولا يجيد التعامل معها بحكم طبيعته و شخصيته، يرتبط بذلك تبدلات حصلت في كينونة المجتمع مؤخرا وظواهر أطلت برأسها أخيرا، مثل ظواهر الإلحاد والتطرف الديني، وأيضا هو يقف منها موقف الحائر برغم أنه يعجب بشخصية تمثل الموقف الوسط وهو مديره "فلاح" في الدوام، والذي يتعرض لمضايقات بدوره بسبب إخلاصه في العمل ومحاربته لشخصيات لا ترغب سوى بالتطوير الشكلي ونسيان ما يحقق للعمل تقدما ورفعة حقيقيين بعيدا عن الوساطات والمجاملات الشخصية.
