تدور أحداث الرواية حول شخصية "خالد"، موظف هش الشخصية يعاني من مشاكل في إثبات ذاته وتحقيق طموحه و تردده حول طبيعة أمنياته، يعمل في بيئة تتميز بتبدلات و تغيرات بعضها إيجابي، وبعضها الآخر سلبي و لا يجيد التعامل معها بحكم طبيعته و شخصيته، يرتبط بذلك تبدلات حصلت في كينونة المجتمع مؤخرا و ظواهر أطلت برأسها أخيرا، مثل ظواهر الإلحاد و التطرف الديني، و أيضا هو يقف منها موقف الحائر برغم أنه يعجب بشخصية تمثل الموقف الوسط و هو مديره "فلاح" في الدوام، و الذي يتعرض لمضايقات بدوره بسبب إخلاصه في العمل و محاربته لشخصيات لا ترغب سوى بالتطوير الشكلي و نسيان ما يحقق للعمل تقدما و رفعة حقيقيين بعيدا عن الوساطات و المجاملات الشخصية.
