هذا الكتاب سرديَّةُ رحلةٍ قام بها النقيب سادلير سنة 1819م؛ مكَلَّفًا من قِبَل حكومة بمبي بالتوجُّه إلى معسكر إبراهيم باشا، الذي كان منهمكًا – آنذاك - في تدمير الدرعيَّة عاصمة الدولة السعودية الأولى. كان الهدف المعلن من المهمة هو تهنئة الباشا بانتصاراته، ومعرفة رغبته في التعاون مع بريطانيا في الاستيلاء على المنطقة؛ بذريعة محاربة القرصنة. وبما أنَّ موقع الباشا لم يكن معروفًا بدقة لحكومة بمبي فقد وُجِّه سادلير، أولاً، إلى مسقط للتفاهم مع حاكمها سعيد بن سلطان آل بو سعيدي بشأن الحملة التي تنوي بريطانيا تجريدُها ضد القراصنة في الخليج، والحصول على معلومات عن الطريق التي سوف يسلكها إلى غايته المنشودة.
ولا يبدو أن سادلير قد ظفر بطائل من مباحثاته مع سلطان عمان، فتوجه إلى أبو شهر للحصول على مرشدين وأدِلَّاء، ومنها كرَّ راجعًا إلى القطيف أملاً في أن يجد الباشا فيها، لكنه - بدلاً من ذلك - أجبر على القيام برحلة مرهقة طولها ألفٌ ومائتا ميل تخلل فيها الصحراء العربية وبلدانها، فزار القطيف على الخليج، والأحساء، فاليمامة والرياض، ووقف على آثار الدمار في الدرعية، وإذ لم يلتق الباشا فيها توجَّه إلى المدينة المنورة، مارًا بالقصيم وقراها والحناكية، ولم يظفر ببغيته من لقاء الباشا إلا في ينبع على ساحل البحر الأحمر، وهي مغامرة لم يحاول القيام بها أيٌّ من الأوروبيين الذين زاروا الجزيرة من قبل.
