شهدت المجتمعات محلياً وعالمياً أزمات نتاج التطور السريع الملحوظ، وتعتبر مشكلة تعاطي العقاقير المخدرة بأنواعها العديدة من الظواهر الخطيرة التي تجتاح دول العالم في عصرنا الحالي، وقد نالت هذه الظاهرة اهتمام عدد كبير من الباحثين والهيئات العالمية والإقليمية ورصدت الأموال وخصصت العقول لدراستها، لمحاولة الوصول لحل يحد من انتشارها والسيطرة عليها.
ولما كان الإدمان يمثل مشكلة متعددة الأبعاد فقد ظهرت الحاجة إلى تكامل عدد من التكنيكات العلاجية لتقديم برامج علاجية شاملة، ورغم التحسن الملحوظ في عائد هذه التكنيكات، فما زالت هناك بعض المشاكل المنهجية مما يدعو إلى التزايد المطرد للمشكلات المرتبطة بالإدمان إلى زيادة البرامج الوقائية بدرجاتها المختلفة، لأن البرامج العلاجية في حد ذاتها ليست كافية لمواجهة الآثار النفسية والجسمية المترتبة على الإدمان، كما أنه لابد وأن تتطور أهداف العلاج في ضوء الفحص الشامل لجوانب حياة المدمن مثل خبراته الماضية وقدراته وإمكاناته والاضطرابات الأخرى التي يعاني منها والخلفية الاجتماعية والثقافية له، على أن تشتمل خطة العلاج أهدافاً قصيرة المدى، وأخرى طويلة المدى مع اختيار التكنيكات ذات الكفاءة العالية وأن تخضع هذه التكنيكات والخطط العلاجية للمراجعة والتجديد باستمرار، وحول هذه النقاط جميعاً وبشكل تفاصيلي نتناول ظاهرة الإدمان في هذه الدراسة من خلال منظور نفسي، متتبعه أسبابه ونتائجه.
