عدّ العديد من المؤرّخين والمؤلّفين وحتّى الفلاسفة إن الثورة الفرنسية نقطة لانطلاق الفكر التحرري والوحدوي، ليس في أوروبا فحسب، وإنما في العالم بأسره، إلا أن الحقيقة التي لابد أن يعرفها الجميع، والتي لا تخفى عن العديد من المختصين في التاريخ الأوروبي، أن الثورة الفرنسية بكل معطياتها ونتائجها، هي ثورة طبيعية كحال بقية الثورات التي حدثت في داخل أوروبا أو خارجها؛ إذ إن سمة التحرر والوحدة والمساواة نادى بها الجميع ضد الاستبداد والظلم. ولاسيما إذا قلنا إن الثورة الفرنسية لم تحقّق مطالب الجماهير إلا بعد عشرة أعوام من الظلم والاستبداد، لذلك فإن ما تحقق في أوروبا بعد الثورة الفرنسية من إنجازات رمى بكل ثقله إلى تلك الثورة، وفق اعتبارات سياسية واجتماعية واقتصادية، على الرغم من أن تلك الإنجازات لم تظهر إلى حيّز الوجود إلا في المدة التي حكم فيها نابليون بونابرت فرنسا، والكثير من المناطق الأوروبية، بفضل تلك الأعمال والإنجازات، وكان لنهاية عصر نابليون أثره على الساحة الفرنسية والأوروبية؛ إذ عمل حكّام أوروبا إلى تبنّي فكرة المؤتمرات الدولية، من أجل إعادة رسم الخارطة الأوروبية من جديد تحقيقاً لأهداف الدول الكبرى على حساب الدول الصغيرة، إلا أن تلك الفكرة فشلت، بسبب حدوث ثورات قومية، غطّت معظم الدول الأوروبية، وأرادت العودة إلى عصر نابليون، ولاسيما بعد ظهور حركة البونابرتية.
