يُعد موضوع الزَّواج السّياسي في أوروبا العصور الوسطى من الموضوعات المهمة في مجال دراسات تاريخ العصور الوسطى، نظراً لشيوعه آنذاك عند مختلف العناصر التي حفل بها عالم العصور الوسطى، وأيضاً لما له من الصفة الإجتماعية، السياسية والإنسانية.
وقد تم إستخدام الزَّواج السّياسي لتسوية النزاعات بين القبائل والعائلات النبيلة، ولإقامة تخالفات سياسة، ولتعزيز معاهدات السلام بين ذوي القربي.
وقد لعبت المرأة دوراً ملحوظاً في الحياة السياسية لزعماء المجرمان إذ حققت علاقاتهم بإقامة تحالفات عن طريق المصاهرة أو ما يعرف بالزواج السياسي، وكان الزواج في الكثير من الحالات وسيلة ذات مضامين إقتصادية وسياسية وسلطوية هامّة، فإذا كانت الحروب هي التجلي الأكثر شدة ووحشية لحل المشكلات السياسية ما بين الأسر الحاكمة والدول المتنافسة، فإن القصور التي عُقدت فيها حفلات الزواج والمصاهرات، كانت الوجه الأكثر دبلوماسياً وإنسانياً لحل تلك المشكلات المستعصية.
ولقد شاع الزَّواج السَّياسي في العصور التاريخية حتى صارت ظاهرة في أوروبا في العصور الوسطى، وهي ظاهرة تحتاج إلى الرصد والتدوين والتحليل والإستنتاج، وهو ما أحاوله في هذا الكتاب ولكن في فترة محددة في تاريخ العصور الوسطى الأوروبية، في الفترة الممتدة من عام 492م حتى عام 770م.
