كتاب الموطأ للإمام مالك هو أول كتاب صنف في الأحاديث الصحيحة ورتب على الأبواب الفقهية. سمي بالموطأ لأنه صنفه ويسر العلم ومهده ووطأه للناس، وعرضه على سبعين من فقهاء المدينة فوطئوه عليه. كان منهج الامام مالك في الموطأ يقوم على أن يذكر في مقدمة الموضوع ما ورد فيه من حديث الرسول ثم ما ورد فيه من الآثار عن الصحابة والتابعين وأحياناً يذكر بعض الآراء الفقهية له ويذكر عمل أهل المدينة وإجماعهم عليه.
