اعتدت في كثير من الأحيان أن أكتب وظائفي في ذلك المكان، والشيء الذي أذكره تماما أن اعتنائي بوظائفي كان لأمرين أولهما إرضاءً للمعلمة التي كانت تشاهدها في كل صباح، والثاني والأهم خوفا من جدتي التي كانت تفتش في دفاتري عند كل مساء لتتأكّد أن هناك وظيفة جديدة كتبت ولم تشوهد من قبل المعلمة، جدتي الأمية خدعتني طويلا وأنا الذي كنت أحسبها تجيد القراءة والكتابة من خلال أسلوبها، فقد كانت تطلب مني فتح الكتاب على الدرس المقرّر حفظه وعندما أتلكّأ في قراءته غيبا تقرصني بشدّة في ذراعي و فخذي و في أي مكان تطاله أصابعها الخشنة من جراء العمل في الأرض، كنت أحياناً أحاول الهروب قبل العقوبة وخصوصا إن ظهرت بعض العلامات على قسماتها و التي كانت نظام إنذار مبكر لعقوبة قادمة مع وابل من الإهانات.
