فقد نهض النحو العربي في كلّ ما اشتمل عليه من الأبواب والمسائل التي تألفت منها مفردات أبوابه على شواهد سيبويه الشعرية، فضلاً عن شواهده الأخرى، وإذا كانت الشواهد من كلام الله عزّ وجلّ، وأحاديث نبيّه صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم موجودة بين أيدي الناس، فإن الفضل في إستقصاء الشواهد الشعرية التي اشتمل عليها كتاب سيبويه وجمعها فيه إنّما يرجع إلى سيبويه نفسه؛ إذ هي لم تجتمع في كتاب على نحو ما اجتمعت في كتابه، وأهميّتها لا تقتصر على أنّها وثّقت المفردات المهمّة لكلّ باب من أبواب النحو، وإنّما تمتدّ إلى أنّها اشتملت على الكثير من المسائل الموافقة والمخالفة لسياق ما يرد في كلّ باب، مع ما شدّ منها عما هو مطّرد، وما كان من إلزام الضرورة.
وعلى هذا فإن شواهد سيبويه الشعرية تأتي في المرتبة الثانية بعد العلم الذي اشتمل عليه كتابه: علم شيوخه، وعلمه هو، وتتجلّى أهمّيتها في أنّ النحويين كلّهم بمختلف مذاهبهم، وفي كلّ زمن النظر في النحو، والتأليف فيه كانوا محتاجين إليها، ومعتمدين عليها في ما يصنفون، وفي ما يتفقون بشأنه وفيما يختلفون.
