With this book the author provides us with a comprehensive cultural and political history of the Caucasian peoples. He carefully traces these peoples inter-actions, in peace and war, across the area extending from the Baltic Sea to Central Africa. In the process he brings the often romantic, but very tragic history of the Circassians and Armenians as they faced their countless foes in defense of their homes and freedom.
In the first part, entiled Ancient History, the paths and influences of many but little known nomadic nations as well as the relations of the Goths, both Eastern and Western, the Scyths, Sarmats, Sinds, etc., to the Circassians are explored along with the cultural remnants that today mark their passing.
The second section demonstrates the effects that the rise and fall of various empires in the area, had on the Caucasian peoples. Thus, relations with the successive Byzantine, Russian and Ottoman empires and the effects of the changed balance of power are brought to light. This part ends ends with a discussion of the intrusion of European events upon the area in the two World Wars. However, the value of the treatment lies in the books unique focus. By concentrating on the meaning of these changes in political influence to the Caucasian nations, the all too often forgotten result in terms of human suffering that accompanied imperial ambition and expamsion is properly presented.
Recent developments in the Middle East are also covered. The Turkish Coup, the Arab awakening and revolt and the rise to dominance of the Soviet Union are discussed in terms of their relevance to the Circassians, and of the role that these ever dynamic peoples have come to play in the Modern Age.
