يمثل العهد القديم من الكتاب المقدس (الذي يضم التوراة اليهودية مع عدد من الأسفار الخاصة بالديانة اليهودية) أقدم نمط من أنماط القراءة الدينية للتاريخ. إذ إننا عندما ننظر إلى ما جاء بالعهد القديم باعتباره تاريخ لليهود، نجد العناصر الأسطورية والغيبية تمثل لحمة هذه الكتابات اليهودية وسداها من ناحية، ولكن هذه الكتابات تقدمت خطوة بالفكر التاريخي عندما عدلت العناصر الأسطورية والغيبية بحيث تناسب القراءة الدينية اليهودية للتاريخ من ناحية أخرى. لقد كان التراث الأسطوري موجودا في المنطقة التي عاش فيها اليهود قبل وجودهم؛ وانتحلوا هذا التراث ونسبوه لأنفسهم في فترات زمنية لاحقة حسبما يشير المتخصصون في هذه الدراسات.
