هذا الكتاب يقدم أوبرا "صعود وسقوط مدينة مهاجوني" التي كتبت بين سنتي 1928 و1929 لتكون أوبرا ملحمية تصور تناقضات المجتمع الرأسمالي وترسم نموذجاً شديد السخرية والبشاعة للمدينة الرأسمالية التي تقول عنها الجوقة "فكل شئ ها هنا مباح، وكل شئ يشترى بالمال أو يباع"، والتي تنفذ حكم الإعدام في رجل تهمته الوحيدة هي الفقر- أعظم جرم يرتكب على الأرض وفي البر أو البحر، وهذه الترجمة الشعرية بقلم الكاتب الذي كان أول من عرف ببرشت قبل ما يزيد على الأربعين عاماً ونقل إلى العربية عدداً كبيراً من قصائده ومسرحياته الهامة.
