في هذا الكتاب يقدم الأستاذ محمود قاسم ترجمة لرواية، تحمل عنواناً لطيفاً هو "يدوم الحب ثلاث سنوات" لكاتب لم نسمع عنه واسمه "فردريك بيجيديه"، كتب هذه الرواية عام 1997م، وهو في الثانية والثلاثين من العمر، انطلاقاً من تجربة ذاتية، كما يعترف هو بذاك، ولتحقق الرواية بعد ذلك لاسمه دوياً في الأوساط الأدبية الفرنسية.
في هذه الرواية، يحاول الكاتب من خلال قصة تقليدية، يمر بها أي شاب في مرحلة الحب والزواج، أن يستجمع جميع أفكاره ورؤيته وقراءته عن الحب والزواج، ليشكل لها إطاراً فنياً روائياً، فالراوية / السارد، وهو يعمل كاتباً بإحدى الصحف يخصص ثلاث سنوات من حياته لكتابة انطباعاته حول نظرية اكتشف في النهاية عدم صحتها، وهي أن أي قصة حب تدوم ثلاث سنوات، وفي جميع الفصول يحاول أن يؤكد على ذلك، ويقوم بتنظير رؤيته حتى ولو على سبيل المثال، فهو يقول أنه في العام الأول من الحب، أو الزواج، يردد أحدهما: إذا تركتني سوف أقتل نفسي، وفي العام الثاني يردد إذا تركتني سوف أعاني لكنني سأتماسك، أما العام الثالث فيردد فيه: إذا تركتني، فسوف أشرب شمبانيا.
في الخطاب الروائي، يبتعد الكاتب عن الحكي، ويقترب من التحليل، واستخدام المعلومات والإحصاءات التي حددتها الأمم المتحدة عن الزواج في اثنتين وستين دولة منذ عام 1974م وحتى ما قبل كتابة الرواية، أي طوال عشرين عاماً، بأن أغلب حالات الطلاق تتم في السنة الرابعة من الزواج، بما يعني أن الحب قد استمر في هذه الزيجات ثلاث سنوات. كما أن الكاتب استخدم رؤيته هو عن الحب، انطلاقاً من تجربة مرّ بها، طلاقه من "آن" زوجته، وعلاقته مع "آليس" المتزوجة التي لم تفكر بالإنفصال عن زوجها، حتى وإن خانته، هي امرأة تستطيع أن تعيش عاشقة، ومعشوقة أطول من المدة التي حددها الكاتب، وإحصائيات الأمم المتحدة، ... وعندما خرجت أليس من حياته، يحاول استعادة طليقته "آن" التي تبدو حاسمة وهي تخبره أن كل شيء انتهى، وأن رجلاً آخر في حياتها قد ظهر.
