كتاب يهدف إلى تزويد الدارسين بالمعلومات الخاصة بتنمية المهارات الأساسية للمعاقين عقلياً، ويتناول مفهوم المهارات بصفة عامة، والمهارات الأساسية اللازمة للمعاقين عقلياً - كمهارات السلوك التكيفي، والمهارات الحياتية، والإجتماعية على وجه الخصوص، مع التركيز على أساليب تنمية تلك المهارات، والبرامج المستخدمة في ذلك.
يبدأ الكتاب بفصل تمهيدي عن الإعاقة العقلية، ويناقش المفاهيم الخاصة بها، وأوجه القصور في مهارات المعاقين عقلياً، ثم جاء الفصل الثاني ليتناول تحديد مفهوم المهارات بصفة عامة، والمهارات الأساسية اللازمة للمعاقين عقلياً، وخطوات تنمية المهارة، والأساليب المتبعة في ذلك، وتناول الفصل الثالث: تحليل المفاهيم المرتبطة بالسلوك التكيفي، وأبعاده، والمهارات الأساسية فيه، مناقشة أساليب قياس، وبرامج تنمية مهارات السلوك التكيفي لدى الأطفال المعاقين عقلياً، أما الفصل الرابع فيركز على المهارات الحياتية بصفة عامة، وأساليب تنمية المهارات الحياتية لذوي الإعاقة العقلية التي تساعدهم على الحياة المستقلة.
وجاء الفصل الخامس لتناول المهارات الإجتماعية، وبيان مفهوم المهارات الإجتماعية وأهميتها في حياة الطفل وذوي الإعاقة العقلية خاصة، ثم بيان مكونات المهارات الإجتماعية ومظاهر قصورها لدى الم عاقين عقلياً، وتطبيق أساليب تنمية المهارات الإجتماعية لديهم.
