كتاب يضم بين دفتيه مسيرة مخرج - فنان طليعي اختار على مدى عقود أن يضع، كما يقال، سينما عربية، وهي على مفترق طرق، أن يضعها على خارطة السينما في العالم.
مسيرة واجهت عقبات إنتاجية وصعوبات شديدة في مراحل تحقيقها المستمرة، وكما يبدو من شهادات أهم نقاد السينما، التي تبين، بعد غياب الفنان نبيل المالح أولاً عن السينما لعقود وبعد أن توقفت مسيرته الفنية والفكرية الإبداعية من كل الجوانب، تبين أنه حقق نجاحاً حقيقياً في بعض الأفلام وأخفق في تحقيق سيناريوهات أفلام أخرى تعرضت للعقاب مرة هنا وأخرى هناك!...
لم يكن لشغف السينما الإبداعي المهيمن على مساعي الفنان نبيل المالح أن يستمر لا في وطنه سوريا ولا في غيرها من مدن منفاه ألقسري، غير أنه قدم موديلاً لفيلم بديل عما هو سائد، ونجاح في إن يلهم جيلاً من صناع الأفلام لينجزوا مهمة السينما البديلة، والذين واجهوا أيضاً في الغالب عقبات لا تحصى: ذلكم هو قدر سينما عربية أرادت ولماً تزل تحاول أن تضع بصمتها على خارطة السينما العالمية.
ومع أن نبيل المالح صنع فيلمه الروائي الأول القصير "إكليل الشوك" حول قضية الشعب الفلسطيني، وصنع فيلمه الثاني متوسط الطول "مخاض" أيضاً عن القضية الفلسطينية، إلا أنه أراد أن يشغل نفسه بصنع أفلام عن قضايا ومشاكل الوطن: أفلام كالفهد والسيد التقدمي، وفيلمه ما قبل الأخير كومبارس الذي بيّن فيه مشاكل مجتمعه الدمشقي، وعبّر بشكل مبتكر عن كيف يمكن للسينمائي التعبير عن "ماذا" الإجتماعي.
إشكالية إبداعية الـ "ماذا" و"الكيف" كانت شغف نبيل المالح: كيف نصنع سينما بديلة، تحقق لنا مكاناً في السينما الفنية والفكرية على خارطة السينما العالمية؟...
يا لها من مسيرة ويا له من هدف جليل جعل الفنان نبيل منارة فنية وثقافية تضيء الطريق أمام أجيال من السينمائيين: لاحقهم وسيلاحقهم العقاب، ولا بد لهم يوماً ما أن يحققوا مسعى وشغف الفنان نبيل المالح الإبداعي ومن هنا أتى ويأتي خلوده.
كتبت ابنته ايبلا في رثاء رحيله: "علمتنا الطيران قبل أن نستطيع المشي" كان الطيران هواية نبيل في الحياة وكان يصيب من يحب بالعدوى بهذه الهواية.
