استطاعت ظاهرة تلقي برامج التلفزيون الفضائي أن تنتشر بوتيرة سريعة بفعل الأجهزة الالكترونية والأقمار الاصطناعية التي تبث على مدار الساعة. وبدا إقبال الجمهور على برامج الفضائيات، قوياً، كما شكّل تأثير هذه البرامج في سلوكيات الفرد والعائلة، والمجتمع عموماً، منعطفاً في اتجاهات القِيَم، ولا سيما الشباب.
ويقدّم هذا الكتاب دراسة حيّة، ترتكز على مشاهدات ومقابلات وإجراء استطلاعات الرأي، إضافة إلى البحوث ذات الصلة، باللغتين العربية والأجنبية، وهي جميعاً تخلص إلى مجموعة استنتاجات في غاية الأهمية من حيث بيان فهم أثر التلفزيون الفضائي في الشباب في إطار علاقاتهم مع باقي الفئات الأخرى التي تشكّل النسيج الاجتماعي. ومن أهم الاستنتاجات التي قدّمها الكتاب، التغيرات التي حدثت في الممارسات الثقافية والإعلامية، منها غياب الشباب عن النشاطات الثقافية المنظمة. ويتصل هذا الانسحاب من النشاطات الثقافية بميل الشباب نحو ممارسات أخرى، منها استعارة الأشرطة السمعية – البصرية، والأقراص الممغنطة، واستعمال الإنترنت.
وتبيّن أيضاً أن هذه البرامج تضع الأسرة أمام تحديات جديدة، أقلّها أن معظم البرامج التي تقترحها الفضائيات لا تستجيب لمقتضيات النَسَق القَيِمي الذي تحتكم إليه الأُسَر، وهو ما أدى إلى تشتت وحدة المشاهدة الأُسَرية، وظهور النمط الانفرادي، وتلاشي أنماط التواصل الاجتماعي المباشر داخل الفضاء الأُسَري، ما يؤدي إلى إحساس الشاب بالغربة عن الجو العائلي، إضافة إلى فتور الروابط التي تجمع الشاب بباقي أفراد الأسرة.
بالمقابل يقدّم الكتاب دراسة مركزة لتدخّل الوسطاء الاجتماعيين عبر الاتصال المباشر، الذي يتجلى في التوجيه المرتبط بالاستعمالات، عبر النصح والإرشاد، وتدخل الوسطاء لقلب نظام المعنى عند ما يتعارض مع مقتضيات الثقافة الأصلية.
