كان العربي يشعر بوجود إله قبلما تطرأ عليه هذه العقائد الجاهلية( انظر الوثنية الخارجية) وكذلك الفارسى والهندى والمتوحش فى جنوب افريقيا وأستراليا، يقر كل هؤلاء بوجود الله إذ يبعدون النور والظلام والمظاهر الطبيعية والحيوان الطوتمى، معتقدين أنها مظهر من مظاهر العلة الأولى ، وهو لا يحتاج فى ذلك غلى دليل فلسفي، وذلك لأن وجوده ليس بشئ بشئ مادى حتى يحلل فى معمل العلم، بل وجوده يشعر به كل قلب ذكي سليم، ولكن ليس كل قلب بسليم وذكي، ولذلك نحتاج إلى معرفة صفاته التى تدل على وجوده وعظيمة، وهذا الموقف هو الذى تختلف فيه الأديان، فالمذاهب التى تعتقد بعدة الألهة ما هى غلا رجع بالعقلية إلى عصر البدتوة التى كان المتوحش يعبد فيها كل شئ مخيف أو مفيد وعلى أنه علة لجميع الكائنات.
