تأتي هذه الدراسة في الأنماط اللغوية في أقدم نص أدبي ولذا تعد من بواكير الدراسات التطبيقية للمنهج على نصوص قديمة في الوطن العربي.
وقد قسمت الرسالة تمهيداً وثلاثة فصول وخاتمة، وقد اقتضى كل فصل أن يطبق عليه المنهج الذي يحمل عنوانه، فكانت الدراسة الوصفية منهج المبحث الأول من الفصل الأول الذي تناول المنهج التوليدي والتحويلي في اللسانيات، وكانت الدراسة التاريخية منهج المبحث الثاني من الفصل الذي خصص للجذور التاريخية للمنهج التوليدي والتحويلي. وكانت الدراستان الوصفية والتاريخية متداخلتين في الفصل الثاني الذي تناول التوليد والتحويل في الجمل. أما الفصل الثالث فقد تناول تطبيقات التحويل على الجملة في القصائد السبع الطوال الجاهليات.
وقد اعتمدت الدراسة مصادر كثيرة كان أهمها أمات الكتب العربية لكل سيبوبة والجاحظ وقدامة بن جعفر وابن جني والجرجاني وابن هشام، واعتمدت مؤلفات كثيرة تناولت المنهج التوليدي والتحويلي.
