هذا الكتاب هو حصيلة ما خبرناه من أحداث كان مسرحها لبنان، وقد عمد الكاتب أنطوان سعد إلى سردها في مواقعها ومواضيعها، فجاءت صورة من الأوضاع التي كان يعاني منها لبنان واللبنانيون في وجه عام... وقد أوردها للذكرى والفائدة، لعل من يطالعها يستفيد منها فلا يعود إلى ما جرى في لبنان.
إن سوريا جاءت إلى لبنان بجيشها ونفوذها، وقد كان ما كان مما لا نريد أن نذكره، إنما يقتضي الواجب والتاريخ أن تذكر أن معظم اللبنانيين عملوا ما بإستطاعتهم لإخراجها من لبنان، إذ أن هذا البلد منذ عهود بعيدة، كان ولا يزال شغوفاً بالإستقلال والسيادة وحكم ذاته بذاته.
لذلك كانت قبضة السوريين ثقيلة عليه كباقي من حاولوا الإستبداد به والسيطرة عليه، ولكن الشعب اللبناني، وإن تفرق بعض الشيء، عرف كيف يوحّد جهوده ليخرج المحتل من أرضه، ويرعى شؤونه بذاته، وينطلق حراً من كل قيد في سماء الإستقلال...
وإنّا نقولها براحة ضمير: إنّا قمنا بما قمنا به في سبيل المحافظة على بلدنا وإستقلاله وحريته، ولو كلّفنا ذلك الكثير من المشقات، وبعض الأحيان الكثير مما نأسف له.
