إرتضى الله للناس ملةَ الإسلام دينًا، وبعث إليهم خيرَ رسله وخاتم أنبيائه محمدًا ، الذي كان خيرَ الناس خُلقًا، وأعلاهم فضلًا، وأرفعهم شأنًا، فطهَّره الله من كل سوء، فكان قدوةً لأصحابه الطاهرين، ومَن بعدهم من المسلمين.
وبين فترة وأخرى نجد من يتعرض للنبي محاولًا أن ينتقص من قدره، أو أن يعيب سبيله، وهذا في الحقيقة كمن ينطح صخرًا، أو يضرب بسيفه بحرًا، فلم يلمزه أحد إلا خاب وخسر، ولم يهاجمه بشر إلا تضاءل واندحر، ولقد توعد الله تعالى من شاقَّ النبي أو قاتله أو سبه بالخزي والصغار، والمذلة والعار، وقد يسر الله في كل عصر ومكان من يتصدى للدفاع عن رسول الإسلام، فقد سخر الله لدينه جنودًا، فهم بحمايته قائمون، ولأعدائه مترصدون.
ومن جنود الله في الدفاع عن رسوله شيخُ الإسلام ابن تيمية، فقد ألف كتاب «الصارم المسلول على شاتم الرسول» وبين فيه جزاء من سبَّ النبي من عقوبات وأحكام، مهتمًّا بذكر جميع الأقوال والآراء في كل مسألة، مع اهتمام كبير بذكر أدلة كل رأي، والتعليل لكل منها.
