إن الطب الشرعي واحد من أفرع علم الطب البشري. والذي يناط به تقدم المشورة الفنية في بعض الموضوعات الجنائية وفي مجالات لصيقة بتخصصاتهم حيث تشتد حاجتهم إليها كوسيلة من وسائل الإثبات الجنائي في مواجهة المجرمين بدلاً عن الوسائل التقليدية في الاستنطاق بما لها من ماض مثقل بالأوزار. فلا يخفى أن الطب الشرعي هو خير خلف لأسوأ سلف فهو يصل إلى الحقيقة المبتغاة دون إهدار لكرامة المتهم وبأسلوب علمي لا ينتابه شك ولا تحيط به شبهة. وهذا عين ما تأمله المنظمة الدولية للدفاع الاجتماعي لمنع الجريمة بوسيلة من أكثر الوسائل الإنسانية في التعامل مع المجرمين. واليوم بدأت الدول باحتواء هذا الفرع فجعلته فرعاً مستقلاً منهاجاً وأشخاصاً وأهدافاً. وإن اختلفت في تبعيته، فهو يتبع وزارة الداخلية في تونس ويتبع وزارة الصحة في الأردن والعراق، ويتبع وزارة العدل في مصر. والاتجاه الأخير هو الصحيح مسايرة لتبعية جهاز الطب الشرعي للقضاء الجنائي. وإن كان ذلك في النهاية مجرد خلاف إداري لا أثر له على الجانب الفني ولا على رسالة الطب الشرعي ومن هنا أصبحت مادة أساسية في كليات الطب والحقوق والشرطة والمعاهد القضائية العليا.
ومن منطلق الاهتمام بهذا الجانب القضائي الطبي يأتي هذا البحث حول "مبادئ الطب الشرعي والسموم لرجال القضاء"، حاول المؤلف بمؤلفه هذا من ناحيتين تفتقدهما كافة المراجع الطب شرعية، الأولى شكلية: استخدام الأسلوب الأكاديمي في عرض الرأي والرأي الآخر متى وجد، والإشارة إلى كافة المصادر بالهوامش، لمن أراد أن يتعمق. الثانية موضوعية: يعرض المؤلف في بحثه هذا الحقيقة العلمية لكل موضوع من مواضيع الطب الشرعي مستخلصاً منها دور سلطة التحقيق. وقد تم وسم المواضيع بعناوين مستقلة وذلك تسهيلاً لعمل المتخصص والباحث في هذه المواضيع.
