الحدث الرئيس في هذه الرواية القصيرة هو موت الأم. إذ بالرغم مما يكنه أبناؤها لها من كره، يبقى حدثا جللا في مجتمع جماعاتي يعتمد بشكل كبير على مؤسسة الأسرة. بسبب هذا الحدث تتكشف خبايا الشخصيات الأخرى التي تعيش في عائلة غريبة عن بقية المجتمع، ويكون هذا الحدث مدخلاً لطرق إحدى الأفكار الفلسفية المعروفة بـ"وحدة الأنا"، والتي تقول بأنه لا وجود لشيء آخر غير عقل الفرد ذاته، أي أنها موقف معرفي يقول بأن أي شيء خارج عقل الانسان هو غير مؤكد. "أفعى تأكل ذيلها" أو أوروربورس هو رمز قديم له دلالات ورمزيات كثيرة على مدى التاريخ، ولكن ما يرمز له في هذا العمل الروائي هو معرفة الذات عبر الذات نفسها، والخلود، ودورة الطبيعة اللانهائية والمتكررة بين الوجود والعدم. تعتبر هذه النوڤيلا من الروايات التجريبية، فهي تتناول موضوعا فلسفيا لم تتطرق إليه الرواية العربية من قبل، بل تحاول هذه الرواية أن تبعد الرواية العربية عن الموضوعات السياسية والاجتماعية المتكررة، وإعادة السرد لموقعه الطبيعي كقيمة جمالية لا كممارسة اجتماعية. ومن حيث الأسلوب وتقنية السرد، فالرواية كتبت في خمس فصول لكل فصل 5-7 مقاطع تمثل مشاهد قصيرة تجميع بينها الثيمة، أي أن العمل السردي هذا لا تقوده الحبكة وإنما مقاد بالثيمة وهذا الأسلوب قد يكون جديدا في الرواية العربية لكنه ليس كذلك في الرواية العالمية. تحاول هذه النوڤيلا أن تقدم رواية عربية جديدة أو طليعية تتجاوز السرد السهل الذي يتجرعه المتلقي بسهولة، وتقدم رواية تحفز على التفكير، وذلك عبر تقنية الحذف وعدم قول كل شيء، بالإضافة إلى تطعيم النص بسريالية غرائبية تجبر القارئ على محاولة تشكيل المعنى والمشاركة فيه.
