يتجه هذا الكتاب لدراسة تضاريس اللحظة الحرجة المتمثلة بمرحلة ما بعد حرب الخليج بوصفها مرحلة ذات خصوصية بالغة لما حدث فيها من تحولات، ويقدم الصورة التي رسمتها أقلام الروائيين السعوديين للمجتمع السعودي في تلك المرحلة دراسة نقدية من خلال تحليل عناصر هذه الصورة للتعرف على الطرق التي انتهجها الروائيون في تصوير مجتمعهم حينما يعرضون للمفردات التي يتشكل منها المجتمع، تلك التي تتجه أصلاً نحو البنى الثقافية، والاجتماعية، والاقتصادية.
وإذا كان الأدب - في أحد أهم تفسيراته - هو مرآة مكسورة لعوالم البشر، فإن ذلك أصدق ما يكون في الرواية؛ إذ إن طبيعتها تقوم على تصوير العمق الحضاري لمجتمع من المجتمعات، وتصوير أزمة الإنسان في هذا المجتمع، ويتم ذلك عن طريق رؤى الكتاب التي تعكس شكل المجتمع من زوايا متعددة؛ فالرواية - أداة فنية للوعي يمكن بواسطتها رصد وضع مجتمع، وتجسيد أزماته العامة من خلال شخصياتها الروائية الفردية، وحين يوجد تغير ما فإن الرواية هي أقدر الأنواع الادبية على رصد ذلك التحول.
