يتناول هذا الكتاب عديداً من موضوعات التصوف والزهد فى الإسلام. وفيه يؤصل صاحب قوت القلوب الحياة الروحية فى الإسلام من خلال الكتاب والسنة. وفيه يذكر أيضاً- أوراد المريدين، وفضل النوافل وقيام الليل، وأذكار العابدين. ويتحدث عن مقامات الصوفية فيشرح مقامات اليقين التى ترد إليها فروع أحوال المتقين، وأولها التوبة، ثم الصبر، ثم الشكر، ثم الرجاء، ثم الخوف، ثم الزهد، ثم التوكل، ثم الرضا، ثم المحبة. وأيضاً من الموضوعات التى تناولها أبو طالب المكى فى كتابه هذا تفصيله للكبائر وكيفية التطهر منها. وقد كان يهدف من كتابه التركيز على الجانب الروحى فى الإسلام، وبيان حقيقة الزهد وتأصيله من خلال إبراز النماذج الرائعة للزهد.
