يعتبر الكتاب بجزئيه من الكتب المهمة العظيمة في علم التصوف. ويعد مصدراً رئيسياً اعتمده الغزالي في تأليف كتابه "إحياء علوم الدين" إذ ذكر الغزالي ذلك في كتابه. ويشتمل الكتاب على ثمانية وأربعين فصلاً بيّن المؤلف من خلالها للناس بأن علم التصوف هو خلاصة علم الشريعة، وأن عمل المتصوفة هو ثمرة العمل بالشريعة، وأن هذا العمل إذا قام على الإخلاص والمراقبة فتح أبواباً من المعرفة والعلم، لا تفتح بغير المجاهدة، والصبر على مشقة التعبير، ومحاسبة النفس على خطراتها، وأن هذه الأبوام من العلم والمعرفة، لا يقوم عليها إلا من نوّر الله قلبه، وأراه بعين بصيرته من المعارف والعلوم ما لا يراه الواقفون مع عقولهم عند ظواهر النصوص، وهذا ما يسميه علم الباطن، ولكنه يربطه بعلم الشريعة برباط لا ينقصهم.
كتاب يبحث في التصوف الإسلامي، وهو من بين الكتب الجليلة التي وضعت في هذا العلم ويعد مصدرا رئيسيا اعتمده الغزالي في تأليفه إحياء علوم الدين، وهو كتاب مهم ومشتهر ويرجع هذا إلى الأهمية البالغة التي يحظى بها مصنفه وخاصة في علم التصوف، وقد كتب أبو طالب المكي هذا الكتاب ليبين للناس أن علم التصوف هو خلاصة علم الشريعة وأن عمل المتصوف هو ثمرة العمل بالشريعة وأن هذا العلم قائم على الإخلاص والمراقبة والصبر على مشقة التعبد ومحاسبة النفس.
