نشر ويلهلم جنسن رواية "غراديفا - فانتازيا بومبية، على دفعات في صحيفة "الصحافة الحرة الجديدة"، الألمانية في عام 1902، مستوحياً إياها من منحوتة رومانية تحمل الإسم نفسه.
وبعد قراءتها، أرسل عالم التحليل النفسي كارل غوستاف يونغ نسخة عن الرواية لأستاذه سيغموند فرويد الذي أعجب فيها إعجاباً شديداً وتناولها في دراسته الشهيرة "الهذيان والأحلام في غراديفا لجنسن" في عام 1907، وامتلك أيضاً نسخة عن ذات المنحوتة حصل عليها من متحف الفاتيكان وبقيت معلقة على جدار مكتبه حتى وافته المنية.
تمثل الدراسة تحليلاً لصنف من الاحلام التي لم تراود إنساناً قط، تلك الأحلام التي تبتدعها مخيلة الكتّاب الخصبة وينسبونها لشخصياتهم المختلفة في إطار الحبكة، واستخدم فرويد الرواية ليظهر للجمهور أن الكتّاب كانوا من أوائل المحللين النفسيين، إذ تنبع أعمالهم من تواصلهم المباشر مع اللاشعور.
ونظراً للأهمية العالمية التي حظيت بها الرواية ودراسة فرويد عنها، بادرت "الجمعية القومية لتطوير التحليل النفسي" (Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis National) التي تتخذ من الولايات المتحدة مقراً لهان في عام 1994، إلى إطلاق "جوائز غراديفا" لتكريم الإنجازات الأدبية والفنية التي تسهم في تطوير التحليل النفسي والعلاج النفسي.
