علم أصول الفقه هو العلم الذي يبين المناهج التي قدّمها الأئمة المجتهدون في استنباطهم وتعرفهم على الأحكام الشرعية في النصوص السمعية، واستخراج العلل والأحكام وتلمس المصالح التي قصد بها إليها الشرع وأشار إليها القرآن.
وقد صنّف الإمام السرخي كتابه في هذه الأصول وانقسم هذا الكتاب الذي جاء ضمن جزءين إلى موضوعين رئيسيين هما: 1-معالجة الأصول الرئيسية باستفاضة تامة في اتجاهات الأحكام والأبحاث اللفظية المتعلقة بالتفسير، ثم بحث الأخبار والإجماع والقياس. 2-إيراد كثيف للأخبار والأحاديث التي تعين على ضبط الموضوعات ذات الطابع العقلي أو الاجتهادي كالقياس والتعليل والاستحسان والمناقضة والانتقال والانقطاع والترجيح وسواها.
وتسير الموضوعات في هذا الكتاب على نحو يبدأ بتحديد الموضوع وبيان دلالته ثم بيان وقوعه في الأحكام فبيان الصحيح والفاسد منه. يلي ذلك مجموعة من الفصول التي تبرز وقائع وحجاج في هذا الموضوع، كما سلسلت الموضوعات في البدء في قول الإمام أو الأئمة، أما التوجه العام في بناء القواعد فلم يخرج فيه الإمام السرخسي عن موقف الأصناف، حيث يشكل أفضل الممثلين للأصناف في بناء كلياته على الفروع، وفي ردّه على حجج وآراء الآخرين.
