إن الحقب التاريخية التي تناولتها الدراسة ظل الكثير من وقائعها وأحداثها مطمور، والذي يشكل منطلقاً وركناً حيوياً من تاريخ السودان السياسي والعسكري.
وقد بقيت هذه المرحلة بعيدة عن إهتمام الكتاب والمؤرخين، وفي نهاية الأمر غابت حتى عن الكثير من الذين دونوا تاريخ السودان لهذه المرحلة المهمة بإطارها التاريخي والنضال العسكري والسياسي، وتبدأ المدة المحددة للدراسة من نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وبالتحديد من عام 1892، وسنة ميلاد الملازم علي عبد اللطيف أحمد الذي أصبح رائداً للحركة الوطنية في السودان، والذي أعطى دماء جديدة لها وانعكست آثارها على أبناء وادي النيل من الوطنيين الذين شرعوا في تكوين التكتلات الوطنية المتنوعة التي ظلت تناوئ الإدارة البريطانية، منها ما ظهر في أم درمان عام 1918 بجهد ومباركة الخريجين من السودانيين، اطلقوا عليه تسمية نادي الخريجين.
وتبع ذلك ظهور الجمعيات أبرزها جمعية الإتحاد السوداني السرية عام 1921 في امدرمان، وأعقبها ولادة جمعية اللواء الأبيض بالخرطوم عام 1923، وتوج ذلك بظهور إرهاصات ثورة 1924 وهو تاريخ نضوج الوعي الوطني والقومي لدى جيل جديد من الشباب السوداني، نتيجة التأثر بالتيارات والحركات الوطنية التي كانت تهب على العالم الخارجي في هذه المرحلة، حيث شملت مصر والسودان كما في ثورة سعد زغلول عام 1919، هكذا كانت البدايات الأولى لمسيرة الملازم الأول علي عبد اللطيف عندما تقدم الصفوف في هذه المرحلة المهمة من تاريخ السوان، ورفعوا راية جمعية اللواء الأبيض لعبروا اعتدال حركتهم الوطنية في المطالبة بحقوق الشعب بالطرق المشروعة دون سفك دماء في أصعب مرحلة من تاريخ وادي النيل (مصر والسودان)، بهذا ترعرع على قيم ومبادئ حب الوطن والدفاع عنه، وقد كان يتحفز وبقوة لكشف خبايا وأسرار ومزاعم الحكم الأجنبي للسودان بمحمل الشجاعة والروح الوطنية الصادقة مع نكران الذات...
من جانب آخر، حاول بعض المؤرخين الأجانب طمس وإخفاء الكثير من الحقائق والدوافع الوطنية الصادقة وراء مقاومة الإحتلال لتحقيق أهداف بلادهم الوطنية.
إن دراسة هذه الحقبة من تاريخ سودان وادي النيل تؤكد إنها حقبة غنية بأحداثها، ويشكل جزءاً مهماً وحيوياً من تاريخ الحركة الوطنية السودانية التي انتهت في نهاية الأمر بتتويج الإستقلال الكامل للسودان.
