لم يكن من بين النقاد العرب من عهد قدامة بن جعفر إلى عهد ابن رشيق من عني عناية ملحوظة بكتاب الشعر لأرسطو المنقول عن السريانية بأقلام كثير من الفلاسفة أمثال الفارابي وابن سينا وابن رشد. وليس من بين المؤلفين المتقدمين عامة من قصد في نقد الشعر إلى الجمع بين الطريقتين الهيلنية والعربية غير الرياضي الفيلسوف ابن الهيثم المتوفى في القاهرة سنة 430هـ/1038م وذلك بمصنفه الذي يبدو أنه مفقود كجملة آثار ابن الهيثم، والذي عنوانه: "رسالة في صناعة الشعر ممتزجة من اليوناني والعربي" ونظراً لهذا الوضع فإن من الصعب جداً التوصل إلى تقدير تأثيرات أرسطو على نقد الشعر عند العرب. وهذا غرض، فقد أحاطت به شكوك كثيرة وتباينت فيه الآراء كما يظهر ذلك بوضوح من كتاب إبراهيم سلامة وأمجد طرابلسي. فإذا كان أولهما يسلم بوجود التأثيرات الهيلنية على نقد الشعر عند العرب، فإن الثاني ينكر ذلك إطلاقاً. وبالوقوف على كتاب حازم القرطاجي "مناهج البلغاء وسراج الأدباء" الذي تقلب صفحاته، أصبح بالإمكان وضع حدّ للشك والغموض السابقين. فالكتاب يمثل في باب نقد الشعر من جهات كثيرة أهمية بالغة ويصور بغاية الوضوح، كما سيبين المحقق، التأثيرات اليونانية في صناعة النقد عند العرب. وللتوصل إلى ذلك عمد المحقق إلى أولاً التعريف بالكاتب ليتناول من ثم بالتحليل التفصيلي كتابه "منهاج البلغاء وسراج الأدباء" لإماطة اللثام عن الصبغة الهللينية في مؤلفه.
والكتاب وبالرجوع إلى المؤلف حازم ومناهجه، فهو يصرح تصريحاً مردّداً في أثناء كتابه بأنه إنما يتكلم في "البلاغة" ويبحث عما تتحقق به وتتفاضل فيه وإنما هو قاصد إلى "بلاغة تعضدها الأصول المنطقية والحكمية" والجلي أن الكتاب حازم من علم البلاغة ناحية خاصة يحتلها من بين الكتب المشهورة، يمكن تنزيلها من العلم منزلة الأصول من الفروع، أو منزلة فلسفة العلم من العلم، كمنزلة رسالة الإمام الشافعي من علم الفقه، أو منزلة ابن خلدون من علم التاريخ.
