من أهل (أصبهان) سكن بغداد، واشتهر، حتى كان يقرن بالإمام الغزالي.

Book Description
كلّ من يتصدّى لترجمة الراغب الأصبهاني يلحظ الأول وهلة قلة المصادر التي ترجمت له، وضآلة المعلومات فيها؛ وقد أشار الذهبي إلى ذلك بقوله: (لم أظفر له بوفاة ولا ترجمة)، وكذلك فعل كرد علي بقوله: (ولم نعثر له على ترجمة حافلة).
وأقدم الذين ترجموا له ظهير الدين البيهقي (ت 565هـ) وجاءت ترجمته في صحيفتين ليس فيهما عن حياته إلا أسطر قليلة، والباقي حديث عن كتابه "تفصيل النشأتين".
فإذا انتقلنا إلى الذهبي (ت 748هـ) وجدنا أنه ترجم له بأربعة أسطر نصفها لاسمه، فماذا كان له أن يقول في السطرين الباقيين.
ولم يبتعد الصفدي (764هـ) عن ذلك كثيراً، حين ترجم له بما لا يزيد عن أسطر لا تحوي من المعلومات إلا القليل القليل.
وكذلك فعل الفيروزأبادي (ت 817هـ) فترجم له في ثلاثة أسطر عدد فيها بعض أسماء كتبه.
وزاد السيوطي (ت 911هـ) على غيره بأمرين: الأول أنه ذكر أنَّ اسم الراغب (المفضل بن محمد) وأنه بريء من تهمة الإعتزال.
فإذا جاء الداوودي (ت 945هـ) وجدناه ينقل ما قاله شيخه السيوطي دون زيادة أو نقصان.
ورغم أن حاجي خليفة (ت 1067هـ) ذكره في أكثر من موضع من كشف الظنون إلا أن معلوماته عن حياته كانت قليلة نادرة شحيحة سوى أنه قال في إحدى رواياته أنه مات سنة 502هـ.
هؤلاء من القدامى هم الذين ترجموا للراغب، وأما المحدثون فقد ترجم له منهم كثير، ولكنهم جميعاً لم يخرجوا عما قلته آنفاً من قلة المعلومات وضآلتها، وسأستعرض بعضهم لأدلل على فئة اخرى ممن ترجموا للراغب، فالعدد كبير ولكن المعلومات ذاتها، فقد تنقص، ولكنها لا تزيد عما قلته من قبلُ.
