في الصباح أيقظت حسّ الرجولة لديه بتقديم الطعام له، كأنّها تُعلمه أنّه بلغ مبلغَ دفع الضيم عنها، حرص أن يشعرها بذلك من دون أن يتفوّه به.
اتّضحت صورة الأشياء لديه الآن أكثر ممّا سبق، قد تكون الإجابات عن تساؤلاته بكرّهِ صِبية الصُهبان له ونفورهم منه ونبذهم إيّاه عند محاولته مشاركتهم ألعابهم.
كان كرهاً لأبيه الّذي يخدم المحفوظ حدّاً لا يرى غيره، فلم يكن له إخوة أو عشيرة يمكن أن تدفع الأذى عنه، وإنّ بقاءه من دون ظهر سيجعله فريسةً لوحوش الأسلاف، ومكاناً واطئاً تتجمّع فيه كلّ مياههم الآسنة، فلم يجد إلاّ سلطة المحفوظ يحتمي بها.
لكنّ المحفوظ يذلّه أكثر مّما تذلّه الأسلاف، ولن يكون مصيره بأفضل من مصير أبيه، فطريق الثأر لأمّه يخرجه من هذا كلّه، وإن كان يرمي به إلى مصير مجهولٍ لا يُعرف حجم المخاطر فيه، فهو لا يكره أباه، وإن كان يشفق عليه، على ضياع لا يجد له مخرجاً منه؛ مثلما أنّه لا يجد ذلك المِخرج، فخسائره تتراكم مع كلّ يوم خدمةً يقدّمها للمحفوظ، ولا يكون الصبح التالي إلاّ أكثر سواداً من ظلمة الليلة التي مضت، فلا طريق للخلاص، ولكنّ هناك طريقاً للثأر.
