أول كتاب من تلك المجموعة القيمة التى ألفها الأستاذ الأكبر المرحوم الشيخ محمود شلتوت فأثرى بها المكتبة الإسلامية الحديثة, وسد فراغا كبيرا فى الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر, وقابل حاجة ماسة لدى مسلم اليوم وهو يواجه الحياة والأفكار والمعتقدات التى تحيط به وتجابهه, والمجموعة هى: الإسلام عقيدة وشريعة, الفتاوى, من توجيهات الإسلام.
والكتاب, كما يدل عليه عنوانه, يتناول الإسلام من شعبتيه الأساسيتين: العقيدة: وهى الجانب النظرى الذى يطلب الإيمان به أولا وقبل كل شئ- إيمانا لا يحمل إليه إكراه ولا يرقى إليه شك ولا تؤثر فيه شبهة.
والشريعة: وهى النظم التى شرعها الله أو شرع أصولها ليأخذ الإنسان بها نفسه فى علاقته بربه وعلاقته بأخيه المسلم وعلاقته بأخيه الإنسان وعلاقته بالكون وعلاقته بالحياة.
وبمنهجه الفذ الذى تميز به- رحمه الله- وتألق فيه, منهج الاتصال بكتاب الله مباشرة.. قدم لنا الإسلام كأروع ما يقدم.. عقيدة.. وشريعة.. متعانقتين متكاملتين: العقيدة أصل تبنى عليه الشريعة.. والشريعة أثر تستتبعه العقيدة.. ومن ثم فلا وجود للشريعة فى الإسلام إلا بوجود العقيدة. كما لا ازدهار للشريعة إلا فى ظل العقيدة.. ذلك أن الشريعة بدون العقيدة علو ليس له أساس.
