يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ثلاثة عشر مقالاً بأقلام مؤرخين وباحثين من أصدقاء الأستاذ الدكتور بطرس أبو منّه وتلاميذه، كانت نتاج تخصص معظمهم بتاريخ الشرق الأوسط. وقد برزت، بسبب عدم التقيد بالكتابة في مجال واحد، أو في فترة زمنية واحدة، صعوبة تبويب هذه المقالات في أطر مرسومة. وعليه، ارتأينا تصنيفها في ثلاثة أبواب. تناول الباب الأول تأريخ الإسلام والفكر الإسلامي. وشمل الثاني موضوعات في التاريخ العثماني من القرن السابع عشر حتى القرن التاسع عشر. أما الثالث فضم موضوعات في تاريخ فلسطين في إبان فترة الانتداب البريطاني. وشذ عن قاعدة تبويب الكتاب مقالان في الباب الثاني اتفق أحدهما معه من حيث الموضوع – أي تاريخ فلسطين – لكنه اختلف عنه من حيث الفترة الزمنية، أي ما بعد سنة 1948 (العلاّمة الشيعي أحمد عارف الزين، 1883 – 1960: رائد من رواد النهضة في جبل عامل)، أمّا الأخر (من الدولة إلى الأمة ومن الأمة إلى الدولة في مصر: دور الدولة في الإصلاحات القومية ودور القومية في إصلاح الدولة، 1805 – 1952)، الذي يختم هذا الباب، فقد اختلف معه من حيث الفترة الزمنية والموضوع في آن واحد، وذلك بتركيزه على التاريخ المصري قبل الحرب العالمية الثانية وبعدها؛ أي في العهد الناصري.
