ظَلَّ أدبُ أيّام العرب قبلَ الإسلام قروناً عدّةً بعدَ مجيءِ الإسلام أدباً مرغوباً فيهِ، لأنَّ الأيامَ لم تكُن مُجردَ أخبارِ لماثر القبائل العربيَّة وروايات للإستمتاع وحكايات مجالسَ وسَمَرٍ فقط، بل نُظِرَ إليها على أنَّها أحداثٌ تأسيسيَّةٌ للهُويَّةِ المُشتركة: الهُويَّةِ القَبَليَّةِ في العصرِ الجاهليَّ، والهُويَّةِ القوميَّة في العصرِ الإسلاميِّ.
وقد حظيت بإهتمام في حقيبتها الجاهليَّة والإسلاميَّة، بوصفها شكلاً من أشكالِ الإحتفاء بالماضي البطوليَّ، الذي يمجد ذات المجتمع أو الأمَّة وتاريخها، ويعزِّزُ سمات البطولة والشجاعة والقوَّةِ فيها، وقد جسَّدت أيامُ العربِ ذلك، وهذا ما جعلها تمثيلاً أدبياً مرغوباً فيه، استُخدم لإعادة بناء الماضي العربيِّ والحفاظ عليه.
هكذا أصبحت الأيّامُ أحد العناصر التكوينيَّة في الهُويَّةِ العربيَّة الإسلاميَّة، فهي أكثرُ إلتصاقاً بالعربيَّة منها بالإسلاميَّة، وقد أقصت الأيامُ الدِّين بوصفه مُحدداً لِهُويَّةِ العربِ، وكانت بذلك أشبه بمحاولةٍ تجذير للماضي العربيِّ والحسِّ القوميِّ كي يُصبحَ أساساً لا يُمكن تجاوُزُهُ إسلاميّاً، أي إنّ القوميَّة كانت قبل الدِّين عندَ العرب قديماً.
ومن خلال أدب أيّام العرب جرّت صياغةُ ذاكرةٍ تاريخيَّة لا على أساس الدِّين بَل على أساسِ القوميَّةِ، وربما كانت، بذلك، تُمثِّلُ في عصرِ الإسلام حنيناً إلى ماضٍ غير إسلاميّ!...
ويُمكنِ القولُ عموماً إنَّ أدب الأيّام قد نُظرَ إليه على أنه نتاجُ ثقافيّ يَرمِزُ إلى القُوَّةِ عند العربِ، حتّى أفرط في الإهتمام بأيّامٍ بسيطة لا تعدو كونها مُشاجرات لا تستحقُ، لكنَّ كثرتها كانت تهبُ الشعور للجماعة أو للأمَّة بأنها أمَّةً محاربةً شديدةُ اليأس، وقد يُوصِلُ التَّركيزُ على كَثرتِها إلى أنَّها رسالةً لغيرِ العربِ مُفادُها أنّهُم أمَّةٌ مقاتلِةٌ ينبغي أن يُهابَ جانِبُها.
