مثّل السّردُ التّاريخي، بالنّسبةِ للمسلمين الأوائلِ، وسيلةً لإسباغِ الشّرعيّةِ على الرؤى الدّينيّةِ والسّياسيّةِ لمجتمعِهم. ولذا لم تكن المروياتُ مجرّد أدواتٍ لروايةِ الماضي، فحسب، بل لنقلِ الأعرافِ والقِيمِ الأخلاقيّةِ والسّياسيّةِ، أيضاً، وسعت، كذلك، إلى بلورةِ غايةٍ محدّدةٍ للأحداثِ، من أجلِ إنتاجِ وإعادةِ إنتاجِ آيديولوجيا دينيّةٍ وسياسيّةٍ وأخلاقيّةٍ ارتبطت بالسّلطةِ. وبذا كان التّاريخ الإسلامي يُخلط بقيمٍ دينيّةٍ وأخلاقيّةٍ معيّنةٍ، ممّا يعني أنّ المصالحَ السّياسيّةَ والمذاهبَ الدّينيّةَ لعبت دوراً حاسماً في تشكيلِ أنماطِ الكتابةِ التّاريخيّةِ، ناهيك عن غايات المؤلِّفِين ووجهات نظرِهم، وتأثيرها في تفسيرِاتهم الخاصِّة للأحداثِ، من خلالِ كيفيّةِ الاختيارِ والتّرتيبِ والتّحريرِ للمصادرِ المبكِّرةِ، وهو ما أُطلقَ عليه بـ"التّأليفَ المتواري". وهو ما يقود، أيضاً، إلى الاهتمام بكيفيةِ تشكّلِ الذّاكرةِ التّاريخيّةِ في الكتاباتِ المبكّرةِ، وكيف تمّ توظيفُ الانقسامِ الطائفي للذّاكرةِ في معالجةِ إشكاليّةِ العدالة مقابل وحدةِ الأمّةِ، بعد انتهاءِ التّوازنِ السِّياسي-الدِّيني الذي أسّسهُ النّبي. وهذا ما يتفحّصه الكتابُ مليّاً في أنماطِ الكتابات الأولى في السّيرةِ والمغازي والمدوّناتِ الّلاحقةِ، بتبنّي النّظريّاتِ والمناهج السّرديّةِ في قراءةِ التّاريخِ لما تقدّمه من رؤى تكشف عمّا وراء التّاريخ والسّرد
