تتضمن مذكرات السفير أشرف غربال تسجيلًا لأحداث كان مشاركًا فيها وشاهدًا عليها، في عهود ثلاثة رؤساء مصريين هم جمال عبد الناصر وأنور السادات وحسنى مبارك، وخمسة رؤساء امريكيين هم جونسون ونيكسون وفورد وكارتر وريجان. تركز المذكرات على العلاقة بين مصر وأمريكا، منذ فترة عمل أرف غربال رئيسًا لبعثة رعاية المصالح المصرية في واشنطن عام 1967، ثم عودته إلى القاهرة عام 1972 وتعيينه مستشارًا صحفيًا للرئيس السادات، ودوره في فترة الإعداد لحرب أكتوبر 1973، وبعد ذلك سفره إلى الولايات المتحدة في نوفمبر سفيرًا لمصر في واشنطن. وترد فى المذكرات الوثائق السرية للبيت الأبيض بعد رفع الحظر عنها والتي تنشر لأول مرة، عن اتصالات عبد الناصر غير المعلنة بأمريكا بعد حرب 1967، وتجربة عمل أشرف غربال مع السادات مستشارًا صحفيًا، وشهادته للتاريخ عن حقيقة خطة السادات العسكرية لحرب 1973، ورأي المسئولين الأمريكيين بعد الحرب، وما قاله شلزنجر وزير الدفاع الأمريكي عن تقدير واحترام الأداء العسكري للعرب في حرب 1973. وتتضمن المذكرات فصلًا عن حرب الموساد ضد العرب في أمريكا ونماذج من مؤمرات المخابرات الاسرائيلية التي تهدف إلى الإساءة للعلاقات المصرية الأمريكي. ويقدم المؤلف تفصيلات عن صناعة السياسة الخارجية الأمريكية، وفصلًا عن ملامح شخصية السادات.
